The Chicago area is marking 24 years since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks Thursday morning, with solemn ceremonies, moments of silence, volunteer work and other tributes honoring the victims.

At exactly 7:46 a.m., -- the time the first place hit the twin towers in New York -- the Chicago Fire Department will hold a memorial tribute at Engine 42's quarters at 55 W. Illinois.

In Evanston will hold a memorial at Firefighters Park, beginning at 7:30 a.m. In Aurora, officials will gather at the Central Fire Station, with an event at 7:30 a.m., and a moment of silence at 7:46 a.m.

Dozens of other Chicago suburbs are holding events, ceremonies and moments of silence, including Des Plaines, Carpentersville, Villa Park, Oak Lawn, Bartlett, Naperville and Palatine.
