The High Court in Blantyre is set to deliver a ruling this afternoon on whether Malawi’s election management system (EMS) should be independently audited.
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), United Transformation Movement (UTM), and others petitioned the court after the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) denied their request to audit the EMS.
They argued that an independent audit would enhance the credibility and transparency of the upcoming elections.
However, the State urged the court to dismiss the case, stating that MEC has been transparent and that an audit would interfere with the electoral process.
The ruling comes just five days before Malawians head to the polls on September 16.
