MICHIGAN CITY — Twice as many fatal shootings have already occurred this year in the city than by the end of each of the past two years, according to police.

The six lives lost so far this year come during what Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch called a surge in gun violence that is not accidental.

"This violence is out of control," she said. "And it cannot be normalized."

Despite the two-fold increase already this year in shooting deaths, the overall number of gunshot complaints for 2025 are nearly on track with the two years prior, according to statistics requested by The Times.

Michigan City police reported having received 308 gunshot complaints as of Wednesday, which breaks down to about 39 complaints per month. This compares of 417 overall complaints last year
