MUSKEGON, MI — A local garlic bread empire is shuttering its Muskegon operations after more than 80 years.

Cole’s Quality Foods on Tuesday, Sept. 10, issued a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice stating it planned to close its facility at 1188 Lakeshore Drive in Muskegon.

The closure, effective Nov. 9, is expected to result in the termination of 175 employees, 144 of whom are represented by Teamsters Local 406. Because the permanent plant closure affects all union members on the same date, bumping rights will not apply, according to the WARN letter.

The federal WARN Act requires businesses to provide advance notice - at least 60 days - in cases of qualified plant closings and mass layoffs.
