Most Loyalist College classes on Thursday were continuing as scheduled amid a strike by full-time support staff .

The College Employer Council (CEC), which represents 24 publicly-funded Ontario colleges, and the Ontario Public Service Employees’ Union (OPSEU) did not reach a deal as of the union’s strike deadline of 12:01 a.m. Thursday.

Support staff were soon picketing along the easement next to Wallbridge-Loyalist Road in front of Loyalist’s Belleville campus.

They’re represented by OPSEU Local 421; Tim Prewer is the unit’s president.

“We’re just asking for community support because we want to keep the college here and support the community,” Prewer said in a telephone interview from the picket line.
