A 26-year-old Atlantic City man was indicted Tuesday on multiple counts of animal cruelty after he allegedly tortured, beat and killed stray cats in his neighborhood.

Edwin Sanabia was arrested in July.

Investigators, acting on tips from residents, found Sanabia would lure abandoned and stray cats into his home with food and then torture, beat and kill them, the Prosecutor's Office said. Sanabia then allegedly disposed of the cats by throwing their bodies into a nearby dumpster.

Sanabia also is accused of punching, hitting and dragging other cats by their tails, and with beating several cats with sticks while they were hiding in a makeshift shelter on a neighbor’s property, the Prosecutor's Office said.
