In this time of political chaos, a 19th century term has reared its ugly head — “fascism.” But what does it mean? What does it look like in practice?
We need only look to Italy and Germany in the first half of the 20th century to remind us of the dangers. Fascism did not end well for Germans, Italians or the dead Allied soldiers who fought to bring fascism to its knees.
Fascism is a form of far-right, authoritarian ultranationalism characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition, marginalization of minorities, and strong regimentation of society and the economy.
In other words, a form of government based on fear, control, anger, suppression, retribution and violence.
Fascism thrives in times of chaos.
Authoritarian power can be in one person, one party or one re
