Charlie Kirk, a Scottsdale resident and conservative political activist best known for his talks and debates on college campuses, has died after being shot in the neck at Utah Valley University.

Kirk, originally from Illinois, came to Arizona after founding Turning Point USA, a conservative political group now headquartered in Phoenix’s Ahwatukee area.

In 2019, he founded Turning Point Action, an organization targeting voters on college campuses. It later grew into a massive organization backed by President Donald Trump.

“Charlie was brave, and he spoke up for all of us who couldn’t speak,” said Andrea Serrano, mom of a college son who applauded Kirk’s ability to connect with young men. She and others brought flowers and shed tears near the Turning Point headquarters.
