DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) -- Students at two local universities planted flags to memorialize the lives lost on one of the United States' darkest days.

Sept. 11, 2001, will be remembered for many reasons: the attacks, the heroism of first responders and the toll left on those who can do the remembering first-hand.

The events of that day can't be undone, but students from University of Dayton and Wright State University are hoping to honor the lives lost.

Thursday morning saw dozens of ROTC students from both schools gathered together to line thousands of American flags along the Flyers' campus.

One UD student said that the experience showcased the weight of that day.
