FRONT ROYAL — Tim Mawyer was 8 years old at the time of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Now a captain with the Warren County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, Mawyer was on hand to honor the lives lost during the tragedy at a remembrance event in downtown Front Royal on Thursday morning.

Along with the department’s Lt. Aaron Miller and Lt. Camden Whitacre, the local first responders rang bells to signify moments of impact 24 years ago as host Skip Rogers of Able Forces Foundation read a timeline of the events that unfolded that day.

Rogers recalled that four airplanes were hijacked and crashed — two into the World Trade Center’s twin towers in New York City, one into the Pentagon near Washington, D.C, and one in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
