LA CROSSE COUNTY, Wis. (WKBT) -- The first human case of West Nile Virus in La Crosse County this year was reported on Thursday.

West Nile Virus has been reported in multiple counties across Wisconsin this year, including in Clark and Wood counties.

The majority of people infected with West Nile Virus do not get sick, according to the health department. Less than 1% experience severe illness with symptoms like high fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, disorientation, mental confusion, tremors, confusion, paralysis, and coma. Older adults and those with compromised immune systems are at greater risk of developing sever illness from the virus, which can be fatal.
