Faculty, staff and students from the University of Houston, along with military personnel, gathered Thursday morning for a remembrance of the terrorist attacks against the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.
The event, one of several remembrances held in the Houston area on Thursday, took place at the UH Student Center South. That’s where a nearly 2-ton girder from the World Trade Center now stands, leaning to one side.
The twin towers in New York City fell after being struck by hijacked airplanes 24 years earlier, when nearly 3,000 people died in a series of attacks by al-Qaida militants. Other hijacked planes crashed into the Pentagon in Washington and in a field in rural Pennsylvania.
