HARWOOD, N.D. — Volunteers used pruning shears, scrub brushes and a lot of elbow grease to shine up headstones and beautify the sacred grounds of the Fargo National Cemetery.

They were among thousands to turn out at nearly 70 National Cemeteries nationwide on Thursday, Sept. 11, as part of Carry The Load’s annual Patriot Day event.

Patriot Day honors the lives lost in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Virginia and aboard United Airlines Flight 93, forced down in Pennsylvania.

Carry The Load, a national non-profit veteran and first responder service organization, said the event also recognizes sacrifices made in the aftermath — particularly by New York City firefighters who died in the line of duty that day, and hundreds of first respo
