Former Boardman Township employee charged with theft in office

BOARDMAN A Mahoning County grand jury has indicted a former Boardman Township employee on two charges of theft in office, according to court records.

The indictment, handed up Thursday, charges 51-year-old Michael Carkido of Poland with two third-degree felonies.

The charges follow a March 2025 affidavit filed in Mahoning County Court, which alleged Carkido, a former township mechanic, used township funds to purchase personal items.

An internal audit of purchasing records for police department parts and equipment between January 2024 and March 2025 revealed what investigators described as irregularities. The audit began after low-profile performance tires were found in the township garage. These types of tires are not used on Boardman Township vehicles, according to the affidavit.
