Some 310,000 Pennsylvanians — 13,513 in Allegheny County alone — are expected to be cut from the federal food stamp program after new work and documentation requirements are fully implemented by November.
In a briefing Wednesday, Allegheny County and social service agency officials urged recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to submit newly required documentation to county public assistance offices before risking the loss of benefits.
Effective Sept. 1, able-bodied food stamp recipients ages 18-54 without a dependent child under age 18 are required to work, volunteer or participate in education or training for at least 20 hours per week or 80 hours per month.
