AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department (APD) has identified a man suspected of shooting an Austin police officer early Wednesday morning near Zilker Park.

Police identified the suspect involved as 30-year-old Brandon Thompson.

Police said Thompson is charged with Attempted Capital Murder of a Peace Officer, a first-degree felony, and Burglary of a Residence, a first-degree felony. He remains in custody at a local hospital.

The incident happened at around 4 a.m. on Wednesday in the 700 block of Azie Morton Road, as officers responded to reports of a stolen vehicle.

APD Chief Lisa Davis said during the media briefing on Wednesday that the officer was conducting a park curfew check and had called for a tow truck for the stolen vehicle when two people emerged from a tree line. A
