DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - The Iowa supreme court is hitting the road and will be in Bettendorf next week to hear oral arguments in a case involving Scott county.

The court typically hears cases in Des Moines, but sometimes travels to give Iowa residents a closer look at the court in action.

The case presented in Bettendorf involves the Scott County Public Defender’s Office, which takes on criminal cases when defendants can’t afford a lawyer.

Last fall, the public defender’s office asked a judge to remove them from six cases, saying they were overloaded and couldn’t take on new defendants.

A judge refused that request, noting the office was already fully staffed. So now, public defenders are asking the supreme court to decide whether they have to take those cases.
