SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield marked the 24th anniversary of the September 11th attacks with a ceremony at Riverfront Park, unveiling a new monument to honor the lives lost.

The event, organized by the Spirit of Springfield, included the laying of wreaths on the Connecticut River, symbolizing remembrance and unity.

Local leaders and first responders participated in the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of community and resilience. "I know I speak for many veterans and service members when I say this was a formative day," said State Senator John Velis (D), Westfield.

"And again, the response of America in that moment was great unity and caring for each other," said Representative Richard Neal.
