Organizers of the Macomb County Fallen Heroes Memorial deviated from their usual 9/11 routine with a couple of firsts during Thursday’s 15th annual ceremony in Mount Clemens.
For the first time since the memorial was introduced, the committee had an EMS representative as a speaker.
They also presented a flag to the widow of the man who designed the monument — Frank Blowers — a departure from past practice where only the families of fallen police officers and firefighters were allowed to receive a folded American flag.
“We presented it to her after the ceremony as Frank’s passing was a non-line of duty death,” said committee member Bob Woonton, a retired Roseville firefighter.
