TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - Arizona's Emma Gates will represent Team USA in the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan next week.

The high jumper only learned she made the team two weeks ago, but she's ready to clear any bar in her way.

"I knew I had a little bit of a chance, but I kind of was thinking I'm out of the bubble," Gates said.

Gates won bronze at the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on August 1. She cleared 6-3 1/4 feet, a personal best. Even so, she still didn't think it was enough to make the World Athletics Championships.

"I didn't actually understand how the qualification worked," Gates said.

Gates and University of Arizona jumps coach, Bob Myers, initially thought she was a few points short. That was until two weeks ago on August 30.
