The Australian War Memorial is undertaking a governance review and will apologise to authors who entered a literary prize last year after failing to award a winner, amid tensions over how it ought to deal with the tainted legacy of Ben Roberts-Smith VC.
After calling for entries last July and closing them a month later, the Memorial was expected to award the Les Carlyon Literary Prize 2024 by December, but no winner was announced.
The biennial prize, established in 2020 to honour the late historian and journalist Les Carlyon AC, awards $10,000 to the author of a book that contributes to understanding Australia's experience of war.
