A Waynesboro man accused of killing a woman was taken into custody in Augusta County Thursday morning.

Gaines Randolph Thomas, 57, was taken into custody in the 700 block of Old Whitehill Road between Stuarts Draft and Staunton after the Augusta County Sheriff's Office received reports of a suicidal man in the area.

Thomas has been charged with second-degree murder and eluding authorities.

Thomas is accused of killing 46-year-old Waynesboro woman Laura Humphries.

Waynesboro police were called to the 300 block of 13th Street in the city Wednesday night after reports of a domestic disturbance. They found an injured Humphries showing signs of assault and attempted to revive her but were unsuccessful.
