Javon Riley, a getaway driver involved in a gang-related shooting that injured a nine-year-old girl and three men, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 34 years. The 33-year-old was convicted at the Old Bailey of three counts of attempted murder and one count of causing grievous bodily harm to the young girl, who remains unnamed for legal reasons. Despite her miraculous recovery, she will live with a bullet lodged in her brain for the rest of her life.
The incident occurred outside the Evin restaurant in Dalston, north-east London, where Riley was captured on an off-duty police officer's helmet camera. The footage shows the gunman firing six shots while riding a motorcycle, narrowly missing pedestrians. Riley was waiting in a stolen Nissan Duke, ready to flee with the gunman after the shooting.
Riley, from Tottenham, north London, claimed he believed he was involved in a "smash and grab" robbery rather than a shooting. However, the court heard that he had conducted reconnaissance of the restaurant prior to the attack and played a crucial role in the events that unfolded.
The nine-year-old girl was struck in the head by a bullet while dining with her family. The court was informed that she would face "physical and cognitive difficulties throughout her life" due to her injuries. The three men injured in the shooting—Mustafa Kiziltan, 35, Kenan Aydogdu, 45, and Nasser Ali, 44—are believed to have ties to the Hackney Turks organised crime gang, which has been embroiled in a long-standing feud with the Tottenham Turks, with whom Riley is associated.
The gunman, who remains at large, fired the shots in quick succession, with dramatic CCTV footage capturing the moment he raised his weapon. The bullets used in the attack were manufactured in 2023 and have not been linked to any other known shootings. One victim suffered severe injuries, including a bullet lodged in his back, while the others were hit in the legs.
A fourth man, Beytullah Gunduz, who was thought to be a target, had left the scene shortly before the shooting. He was later cleared of any involvement in recruiting a gunman for a separate murder case. The investigation into the shooting continues as authorities seek to apprehend the gunman.
