GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The city of Grand Rapids has seen a year-to-year decline in homicide cases.

Nine homicides have been recorded in 2025 through the first two weeks of September.

That number is a decrease from this time last year, which was 10, Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said in a recent interview.

Of the nine homicides, seven came by way of gunfire. The first gun-related death occurred five months into the year when a man was fatally shot outside of a Grand Rapids bar.

Details of other homicides include a woman who was allegedly beaten to death by her boyfriend, and a teen girl who died from injuries suffered in a house fire allegedly set by her mother.

Victims’ ages ranged from as young as 15 up to 61 years old.
