MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — President Donald Trump announced that the National Guard is coming to Memphis during an interview with Fox and Friends on Friday morning.
President Trump says he is sending them to address crime concerns with the support of the mayor and the governor.
This comes after Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris spoke with WREG, confirming that consideration has been given to the National Guard coming to town on Thursday.
He said while the governor also has the right to ask for Guard troops, he is asking Gov. Bill Lee to “please reconsider, if this is on the table.”
“To have individuals with military fatigues, semi-automatic weapons, and armored vehicles patrolling our streets is way too far, anti-democratic, and anti-American,” Mayor Harris said.
