A jury acquitted a Gary man late Thursday in his wife’s death, according to a Lake County prosecutor’s office spokeswoman.

Ellis Bishop, 69, was found not guilty of murder in the Oct. 8, 2022 death of Victoria Bishop, 60.

Jurors were deliberating since early Thursday afternoon.

He argued that he shot her in self-defense. He testified for about an hour on Wednesday.

Deputy Prosecutor Arturo Balcazar told jurors in closing arguments Thursday that Bishop’s story didn’t add up. Bishop stated Victoria maced him, then tried to to throw a brick through a window.

Bishop claimed he didn’t mean to shoot her, but she died later after being shot with a .357 revolver in the abdomen, he said.

He was “upset at his wife,” Balcazar said. “Tonight, he’d had enough.”
