FANNIN COUNTY, Ga. - A police officer was shot in North Georgia late Friday, and the suspect is on the run, according to multiple law enforcement agencies.

What we know:

The McCaysville Police Department said one of its officers was shot but did not identify the officer.

McCaysville Police Chief Michael Otis said the officer was in critical condition and asked for prayers.

"I ask that you please keep my department, the officer, his family, and his children in your thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time," Otis said on Facebook.

The Pickens County Fire Department later identified the officer as McCaysville Police Captain Brantley Worley. A LinkedIn page for Worley shows he previously worked for the fire department before joining the McCaysville Police Department.
