There have been three recent Winnipeg Transit news stories: Fare evasion, complaints about the new system, and proposed route changes. I have been a delegate on the Transit Master Plan multiple times, beginning with my first appearance on April 16, 2021. I studied every report, spoke with Transit management, drivers, and passengers, and lobbied councillors. The current state of Transit is troubling — and it could have been avoided.
Fare evasion has been a problem for years with little attention from council until now. The new tactic of having community safety officers ask people at bus stops if they intend to pay will do little. Drivers tell me fare evaders come from all walks of life, many with the means to pay.
