A teacher was fined £433 for dropping a ciagrette butt in the street - but was 200 miles away at the time and doesn't even smoke.

Teacher Steve Jones was left with a criminal record despite being innocent after being prosecuted in his absence at a magistrates court for dropping a cigarette butt on Manchester's Market Street.

The alleged offence took place outside H&M on the afternoon of December 14, but Steve was hundreds of miles away at the time.

Manchester Evening News reports he was caught up in the drama after the actual offender provided false information, followed by failures from both the city council and the court.
