UPDATE, 3 p.m.: According to the State Fire Marshall, the fire claimed the lives of 48-year-old restaurant owner, his 33-year-old girlfriend and her 9-year-old daughter who were living in a residential area connected to the Fat Belly's Diner.

The origin and cause of the fire is still under investigation.

ORGINAL STORY: OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- Three people died following a fire that broke out at the Fat Belly's Diner in Opelousas, firefighters said.

According to fire officials, they responded to a call around 2:20 a.m. this morning about smoke coming from the restaurant located at 317 E Jefferson St.

Fire crews initiated a search and reported three lives were lost in the fire, officials said.
