Tornadoes were spotted around the Navajo Nation and at least one touched down near a community in southeastern Utah.

Tornadoes are rare in Arizona, but as many as four to six develop each year, officials say.

Rare tornado events have become a concern for areas on or near the Navajo Nation as rain and strong winds have persisted over the past week.

An emergency tornado alert was issued Sept. 12 for Window Rock, the capital of the Navajo Nation, and the community of Hunters Point. The tornado did not touch down.
