Defence Minister Richard Marles has expressed “confidence” in the AUKUS pact after it was revealed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had given him assurances about the military partnership.

Mr Marles told Sky News Sunday Agenda he had received “positive sentiment” from US counterparts including Mr Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

The Washington Post recently revealed that Mr Rubio privately told Mr Marles that the submarine deal “will not be terminated”.

The Trump administration previously announced a review of the $368 billion defence deal to ensure it aligned with "America First" policy.

Mr Marles declined to confirm the details to Sky News Sunday Agenda, but said the article broadly reflected the tenor of his meetings.
