CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - A former congresswoman who dedicated years to the city of Cleveland died on Saturday.

Mary Rose Oakar was a congresswoman representing Ohio’s 20th district from 1977 to 1993. She also served on the Cleveland City Council from 1973 at 1976.

Among Oakar’s accomplishments, she spearheaded bringing the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to Cleveland, advocated for women’s rights in Congress, and served as president of the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

Oakar also taught at Cuyahoga Community College.

She was 85.
