The Akron Zips did a lot right in a 31-28 loss at UAB on Sept. 13, but not quite enough to avoid falling to 0-3.

After giving up a quick score to trail 7-0, they put together back-to-back touchdown drives to take a 14-7 lead, and led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter on Owen Wiley's 36-yard field goal.

After the Blazers (2-1) built a 31-20 halftime lead, the Zips outscored them 8-0 in the second half. They outgained UAB 159-81 on the ground and led 441-422 in total yards.

UA quarterback Ben Finley completed 19 of 35 passes for 282 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The first of the TD passes was a career-long 75 yards to Israel Polk for the Zips' first touchdown of the season. Polk finished with four catches for a career-best 99 yards and two TDs.
