ON THIS DAY IN 1926 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Approximately $1,000 has been raised by popular subscription among the veterans of Brooklyn for the restoration of the U.S.S. Constitution, known as ‘Old Ironsides,’ proud relic of American naval victories in the War of 1812. About $3,000,000 is being collected in this way from all parts of the nation. It is hoped to finish the task in time to display the warship at the Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia this fall, after which it will make a triumphal tour of every American port and the principal foreign ports. Great care is being taken, according to those in charge of the movement, to reproduce the ship just as it was in the days when it was the pride of the American Navy.”
