CHAPEL HILL — Demon June went from being put on his behind in practice at the bottom of the depth chart to becoming UNC football ’s top running back.
“First week in pads. You got that pass (protection) pick-up drill, got put on my butt. But it’s part of the game. That was just my welcome-to-college moment,” June, a freshman, said after the Tar Heels’ 41-6 win against Richmond in Week 3 at Kenan Stadium.
June, called “JuJu” by his teammates and coaches, had a more positive welcome-to-college moment against the Spiders (1-2), racking up 148 yards on 14 carries for the Tar Heels (2-1). He had a 50-yard run on the opening drive and a 45-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, averaging 10.6 yards per carry.
“He’s earned it. Nobody gave him anything. He started at the bottom of the
