NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Emily Anne Gullickson issued a strong condemnation Saturday morning in response to reports of Virginia school personnel celebrating or condoning the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on social media.

Meanwhile, Newport News Public Schools said they were "made aware of social media comments made by an employee related to the violence that took place in Utah" on September 10. The employee was immediately placed on administrative leave while the district investigates, a spokesperson with the division said. The division did not disclose the content of the comments.
