In March this year Ricky Hatton opened a new mental health unit at North Manchester General Hospital.

“The main thing about mental health is people don’t speak about it," the former world champion boxer said at the unveiling. That was not a charge that could be levelled at Hatton, who tragically was found dead at his home in Gee Cross, Tameside this morning (Sunday).

The 46-year-old was open and brutally honest about his mental health battles during his career and spoke about them regularly in a bid to help others. During his heyday Hatton was one of Britain's most popular and successful fighters.

But despite his remarkable career, Hatton faced his own personal struggles. He has spoken about being left feeling suicidal after losing a fight to Manny Pacquiao in 2009.
