Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has led the Coalition to its worst primary vote level in the history of Newspoll.

The shock result comes as the party reels from the brawl sparked by Senator Jacinta Price's comments about Indian migrants, remarks which ultimately led Ms Ley to sack her from shadow cabinet.

Conducted for The Australian between last Monday and Thursday, as the saga was in full flow, the latest Newspoll found support for the Coalition had plunged to just 27 per cent.

Support for the Coalition has never been lower in the 40 years Newspoll has counted primary votes and is now tracking 4.8 per cent lower than the 31.8 recorded under Peter Dutton at the election.
