A 60-year-old man is dead and a 65-year-old New South Wales man is in hospital after a traffic crash in Queensland’s Darling Downs on Sunday night.

Just after 6.20pm, Queensland police were called to the New England Highway by The Summit after reports that a Mack truck and a Mitsubishi Pajero had crashed.

Police said the impact of the collision caused both vehicles leave the road and catch fire.

The driver and sole occupant of the Mitsubishi, who was a local from Collingwood Park in Ipswich, died at the scene despite medical attention.

He was the sole occupant of the vehicle, police said.

The 65-year-old New South Wales man, who was the sole occupant and driver of the truck, suffered minor injuries.
