LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) – The looming LIRR strike could start this week as more workers on Monday will choose whether to walk out, which would completely stop train service.
Nearly 300,000 commuters would be affected by a strike, which would start on Thursday, on the U.S.’s busiest railroad. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, the union representing 600 LIRR engineers, will announce the results of its vote to authorize a strike.
Workers said they have been without a pay raise for more than three years despite near record inflation. They’re asking for a wage increase of 9.5%, with some groups also holding out for an additional 6.5% on top of it.
