Emmy Awards host Nate Bargatze tried a new tactic on Sunday night in an attempt to keep the evening's speeches to a reasonable time limit. Bargatze pledged to donate $100,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of America at the end of the show. The catch? For every second that a recipient went over the 45 second speech limit, he'd take $1,000 off that total. If someone went under, the same rules applied, but the other direction.
Throughout the evening, they'd check in with the counter to see how much (or how little) would be going to the youth organization at the end of the night. Some winners -- like John Oliver -- were committed to keeping things as short and sweet as possible to hit Bargatze right in the wallet. Others, including first-time winners like Owen Cooper from Adolescence and Cristin Milioti from The Penguin gave understandably longer and heartwarming speeches.
So how much did Bargatze end up having to donate when all was said and done?
Just before closing out the show, the comedian announced that CBS would not only be giving $100,000 to get them to their pre-show amount, but that he would personally be adding a $250,000 donation. That rounded out the total gift to the Boys and Girls Club of America to a whopping $350,000.
