EVANSVILLE — State environmental officials warned that air quality would worsen across much of Southwestern Indiana on Tuesday, citing a mix of high temperatures, light winds and other meteorological factors.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management declared Tuesday an Air Quality Action Day in Vanderburgh, Posey, Warrick, Spencer and Gibson Counties, citing expected high levels of ground-level ozone.

The alert will remain in effect for all of Tuesday, beginning at 12 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

"Anyone sensitive to changes in air quality may be affected when ozone levels are high," the NWS stated . "Children, the elderly, and anyone with heart or lung conditions should reduce or avoid exertion and heavy work outdoors."
