Michigan saw a slight increase in vehicle crashes from 2023 to 2024.
The state reported 288,880 traffic crashes , causing 1,099 deaths and 71,316 injuries, according to annual data published this summer by Michigan State Police.
Crashes involving bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorcycles increased, as did drug-involved incidents, while alcohol-involved and distracted-driving collisions declined.
“While all crashes are alarming, the sharp rise in bicycle-related incidents and work-zone fatalities highlight the ongoing vulnerability of certain roadway users,” said MSP Director Col. James F. Grady II in a statement. “We must work with the public to raise awareness, promote safe driving and focus on these ongoing issues to ensure everyone’s safety in addition to enforcing traffic violation
