BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - Following the numerous tornadoes that occurred across central North Dakota on Sunday, September 14, the record for the total number of tornadoes occurring in the state of North Dakota in a calendar year has been broken.

Through September 13, there were 58 confirmed tornadoes across the state in 2025. Although the National Weather Service is still working on finalizing the total number of tornadoes from Sunday’s event, they are confident there were well more than enough to break the previous calendar year record of 61 tornadoes, set in 1999.

Here’s how the tornadoes occurred across North Dakota in 2025:

May 15: Unrated tornado southwest of Cavalier

June 17: Unrated tornado north of Hettinger

June 19: EF1 tornado near South Heart

June 20: 23 tornadoes across
