SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Shelby Humane Society is asking for donations so it can pay employees.
Executive director Saundra Ivey said a lack of donations in 2025 has left the organization with a cash shortage. The society has been taking donations since Friday to cover its upcoming payroll
The society has raised over $40,000 as of Monday afternoon. To pay its 43 employees this week, it needs almost $8,000 more by Thursday.
“We're down about $300,000," Ivey said. "I don't know. We've looked at it, believe me. We've been tracking it, and this is probably one reason why it finally came up because we've been pulling out of our reserves to try to keep up the shortfall. I think it's the economy part of it. Things are just more expensive."
