LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Seventeen veterans die by suicide each day in the United States, and as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month continues, Laredo leaders and local veterans are launching a new event to honor their memory.

Laredo mayor and Mayor Pro-Tempore joined veterans on Monday, September 15, in announcing the Trail of Hope 5K Run, an event designed to build community and support families affected by veteran suicide. Organizers say the run is not just a challenge, but a movement.

“This is something I hold dear to my heart,” said Randy Villanueva, a veteran peer service coordinator. “The Trail of Hope: Remembering 17 and Supporting the Many is an event where we come together.
