Nearly 50 parents and children filled the Clairton High School library Monday evening, calling on school directors to reconsider a plan that will require some charter school students to take Pittsburgh Regional Transit to and from school each day.
Almost 120 charter school students living in the Clairton City School District will start taking PRT buses beginning Oct. 6. The switch from regular school buses comes as the district grapples with budget constraints exacerbated by a state budget impasse.
“Decisions like this are never easy … but when we are in a budget impasse and when we already are reduced in the funds that we have, we have to make those tough decisions,” Superintendent Tamara Allen-Thomas said after the meeting.
