When the Pirates drafted Jameson Taillon second overall in the 2010 draft, they likely hoped he’d one day pitch meaningful late-season games at PNC Park. That was indeed the case Monday evening, just for the wrong team.

Taillon helped his club get another step closer to the postseason, throwing six scoreless frames to pave the way for a 4-0 Cubs victory over the Pirates. The loss officially eliminated Don Kelly’s club from playoff contention.

“He did a great job of mixing it up on us and not going back to the same thing twice,” Kelly said of Taillon. “He pitched us completely differently, going back and forth. He threw very few sweepers but were effective and just changed speeds and mixed it up. He’s got that curveball that can really slow you down.”
