VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Another local animal shelter has taken in close to two dozen cats from a shuttered animal shelter in Elizabeth City.

A total of 21 cats made their way to Hope For Life Rescue in Virginia Beach from the SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina on Saturday.

The shelter was given notice to close in August after being cited for violations of the North Carolina Animal Welfare Act.

"They have already shut down," said Nina Garces, a lead at Hope for Life Rescue. "And so, they have staff there who were just reaching out, pretty much for hundreds of miles out, just trying to find any rescues who would take some of the animals."

Garces explained that their nonprofit was one of many rescues that answered the call to take in animals.
